Do you need a new mattress?
Before blaming your mattress, do the following apply to you?
1. You've increased your coffee/caffeine intake
2. You're more stressed out than normal
3. You've made a big change in your life
4. You're using blue-light devices (phones or tablets) before bed
If these don't apply, keep reading.
Your mattress is old or worn out.
Cheaper mattresses don't last as long (see chart for typical mattress lifetime by price).
Tell-tale signs your mattress is dying:
- lumps or dips in the mattress
- you roll towards the center
- it has become too soft or firm with age
- there are visible signs of wear and tear
Unfortunately, once a mattress starts to fail, it will only get worse.
Average Mattress Lifespan
You wake up with aches and pains.
Aches and pains in the morning can be related to body alignment issues while you sleep. Even though your mattress may look fine, it might no longer be properly supporting you at night.
Sometimes people have aches and pains on a new mattress. This can be due to your body going through an adjustment period. It can take a few days to adjust to a new bed.
NOTE: If pain is chronic or persists all day, it might not be related to your mattress at all. Consider consulting your doctor to be sure.
You were sleeping better a year ago.
Do any of these apply to you?
- You wake up and remain tired throughout the day
- You don't dream much at night
- Your sleep feels more like dozing than deep sleep
- You often wake up in different positions
- Your partner complains that you toss and turn during the night
If you answered "yes" you may not be entering deep sleep for long enough to experience true rejuvenation during the night.
You sleep better on other beds
If you sleep better on a hotel or guest bed, your mattress at home might need to be replaced. Before rushing out to buy a new bed, think beyond the mattress:
- Is the room temperature different?
- Is there a difference in ambient noise level?
- Are you under less stress - on vacation, for example?
