Mattress materials
Most online brands focus on foam mattresses due to their ability to be compressed, rolled, and shipped in a relatively small box. Novosbed and Casper both make foam-based mattresses, but not all foam is created equal.
Foam densities and how they affect your mattress are important. In short, foam density relates to the quality and durability of the foam. Using lower density foam makes a mattress less expensive, but the trade-off is longevity and durability.
Aside from density, foams can also differ in their bounce-back, or response-time. Many foams have an immediate response where the foam instantly returns to its original shape when a load is removed. In contrast, memory foam is unique because it “remembers” the shape of the load applied when it’s removed before returning to its original shape. You’re likely familiar with the handprint demonstration commonly used to showcase memory foam’s unique response-time properties.
The Casper mattress
Casper uses memory foam, but places it under a high-elasticity foam layer. By putting a polyfoam layer on top, the effects of the memory foam are likely to be reduced; such a mattress construction could lose a significant amount of motion isolation, contouring, and pressure-point relief. In addition, the high-elasticity layer tends to give a mattress more bounce and a spongy feeling.
Novosbed mattresses
Novosbed mattresses are made with memory foam, which separates it from most online competitors. Many of Novosbed’s competitors don’t use memory foam in their mattresses, and those that do tend to bury it under other layers, such as latex foam. By using memory foam as a primary mattress material, Novosbed mattresses have a distinct memory foam feel. This feeling is well-known for having low bounce, dense plushness, and a sensation of being gently hugged by your mattress.
Know what you're paying for
Novosbed believes that sharing the foam densities of their mattresses is important. This way you know what you’re paying for. Without this information, shoppers are left to guess at the quality of the foam used in the construction of the mattress.
Company | Primary layers | Foam density | Other layers | Manufacturing |
---|---|---|---|---|
Casper | Elastic polyfoam | Undisclosed | Memory foam, zoned transition, and support foams | USA or Canada |
Novosbed | Memory foam | 2 - 4 lbs/ft3 | Premium support foam | USA or Canada |
Mattress selection
Selecting a mattress out of a sea of choices is a significant hurdle many people will encounter while mattress shopping. There are simply an overwhelming number of options. Not only are there countless brands, but many have multiple models to choose from. Both Novosbed and Casper understand this and have modeled their selection to help alleviate some of this stress. While Casper has launched different models, this comparison focuses on the original Casper mattress.
Casper mattresses
Casper’s approach is to sell a one-size-fits-all mattress. This one model features a firmness that is sold as “universally comfortable”. The single firmness approach can be appealing to shoppers in a world of overwhelming choice, but the fact is people come in all shapes and sizes which inevitability determines the firmness required to give you a comfortable sleep.
Novosbed mattresses
Novosbed’s strategy is to give customers a choice by offering a selection of mattress models that are clearly named. The Novosbed Soft, Medium, and Firm are all named based on how they feel. Everything from the features, fabrics, and visual appearance are exactly the same. The only thing a customer has to do is to choose the firmness they want.
